TOYP Trophy

The trophy of The Ten Outstanding Young Persons’ of the world program was selected through a Junior Chamber International trophy design competition held in 1983. This competition was open to all JCI National Organization Members and the Executive Committee of Junior Chamber International selected the entry submitted by the United States JCI titles the “Hands for all Mankind”.

The trophy consists of a mounted wooden supporting a pair of golden hands reaching upward with the fingertips holding a golden globe. With regard to the trophy for the The Outstanding Young Persons’ of Sri Lanka an outline of the map of Sri Lanka has been etched upon the face of the globe. The front of the base has a metal plate with the inscription “ These young people joined together will hold the world secure. The unity of their excellence with others shall lift the people of the world for all the mankind.”

The trophy was designed by Kurt Warren Stenstorm, Graphics Manager and Art Director for the United States Jaycees in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1983. One of these trophies will be awarded to a maximum of ten individuals who have been chosen by an eminent panel of judges to be recipients of The Ten Outstanding Young Persons’ in Sri Lanka award.

Judging

The Judges of the JCI TOYP are usually drawn from partner organizations such as the United Nations and the International Chamber of Commerce. Judges also typically include Business and community leaders, university professors, and JCI Board of Directors Members.

The judging is done in two phases. The first phase is a screening process. Their entries are then submitted to a second judging panel, which select 10 honorees. The selection process is rigorous and intense as all nominees are outstanding young people.

The judges evaluate the finalists and rank them, indicating their first, second and third preferences based on three general criteria:

  • How well the nominee exemplifies the principles articulated in the JCI Creed.
  • How the nominee’s achievements may have benefited his or her community, nation or the world.
  • How the nominee’s achievements or leadership may have inspired others.

Based on the preferences of the judges a list of 10 JCI TOYP Honorees is established and published.
